Small Dog, Cat, and Child tolerance~ Our volunteers work hard to evaluate every dog in our program for  their personalities and tolerance with small dogs, cats, and children.  Although noone can predict behavior 100%, we are committed to making the best match possible for each dog and family in our group.

'Older Children Only' means one we feel should only be placed with children 12 years and older who are mature and responsible enough to understand the needs of the dog.  This can be caused by previous concerns with younger children, fragile health, shyness, or an activity level that's higher than would be a good match for very small family members.

Dogs with this icon are under the care of our veterinarians.  For some medical reason they have not been cleared for adoption yet.  Explanation can usually be found in the description, or you can request more details from our adoption staff.  Interested families can still inquire about a dog in holding, however, and can sometimes make arrangements to meet them.

Monty is a fun loving, easy man.  Life may say he's 10(ish) but his heart says he's 2!  Monty is a super boy who just loves life.  He loves to trot around the yard and give a great big happy dance when his humans come home.  Monty spent 3 1/2 years with his first family before they had to move out of the country.  He settled in with his new foster family quickly and after only 3 days has started playbowing and engaging in games of chase with his humans.  Monty has done very well with the stairs, small dog, and children in his foster home but is not cat-friendly.  He likes to go for walks and playing in the yard.  Monty crates like a dream, but really doesn't need it as he is a well-behaved boy when left out while alone.   (Long Island Greyhound Transfer -LIGHT- has gladly given GC permission to help their boy find a new home.)  Updated description!  2.21.08~  Monty has had a bit of trouble finding his new home.  He is experiencing pain in his knee from an injury several years go which sometimes makes him uncomfortable.  He will be happiest with a quiet, structured home and an owner who understands his favorite place is stretched out at their feet.  A fenced yard would be marvelous too so that he can stretch and get a little exercise.  Monty is a terrific boy who has waited a long time for just the right home, and he will repay his owners with attention and affection.

Luna has settled in so well to retired life! She is still very active & has not lost the thrill of the chase. She loves to play w/her 4 foster siblings but can get a little possessive of her toys during active play. She walks beautifully on leash & has mastered her sit & down for treats & meals. She is a high prey girl so can not live with any small critters but is fine with large dogs & kids.  She enjoys bouncing around & playing with the 3 skin kids in her family (12,9,4). She crates wonderfully when asked to do so, potties very well on leash & loves car rides. Luna would love her own home with an active family to spoil her rotten!!

Simon's story is another one affected by the military.  His owner is being deployed, and they will be moving into a much smaller apartment.  They have made the difficult decision to let Simon find a new home.  He has adorable puppy ears and the sweetest face that matches his marvelous personality.  He doesn't demand attention but responds every well to affection and love from his family.  Simon is a well-behaved boy accustomed to living with a cat and very active 3-year-old toddler.  His previous home had a fenced yard but he was once leash-walked so we're confident he will adopt quickly depending on where he is adopted.  Some of our members have known this boy for years and describe him as one of the sweetest greyhounds they've ever worked with!

Fostered by (location):
   Stenhouse (Greer SC)

Train is a strikingly handsome boy that needs a family with dog
training experience. He is a very active boy and not your typical
laid back greyhound. He is outgoing and friendly but can be pushy with other dogs and people and is likely to try to run the house. His foster family thinks he may do well in a home with a dominant female dog that will help keep him in line. He would NOT do well with another dominant male dog and will push a submissive male around. Train definitely needs confident owners that would be comfortable working with a confident dog. His foster family says that Train has a short attention span and has been difficult to teach the basic manners he needs so badly. A potential family should be willing to take him to a professional trainer if necessary. Although he is high energy and pushy, Train has not been aggressive toward people. Train
will need a fenced yard to run around in and someone that will make sure he gets regular walks or jogs to drain his energy. He can be loud when left alone so can not be an apartment or condo dog. He likes children but because of his energy level and lack of manners would be too rough for a family with small children. Train is going to be a wonderful dog for a family that has the time, energy and dog skills to work with an energetic, challenging boy.

Tay is a handsome boy with a sweet salt and pepper face and a lovely blaze up his chest.  He is a VERY fast learner, walking politely on leash after the first day. He is learning to politely wait until he is allowed out of the house on a leash. Once in the crate he is perfect, doesn't make a sound, and sleeps through the night. He does well with the carpeted stairs in his foster home and was happily roaching within the first day there.  Tay is very helpful with anything you want to do and even occasionally checks counters to explore out of curiosity.  His foster home feels like this behavior can be stopped with some consistency and training.  Although he is showing some small interest in small dogs, he will be tested further and may turn out to be safe.  More about this gorgeous boy very soon!

Brook is a medium size fawn girl with blue hair mixed in. She has the most gorgeous Cleopatra eyes with the liner extending almost two inches from her eyes. She's a very very sweet girl who tolerates just about anything! She is very good about getting groomed or being handled in any way.   Brook is quickly getting the hang of stuffies, though it seems she believes the "goal" is to tear the nose off the stuffed screaming monkey! She's a playful girl who does very well with other greyhounds and really enjoys having playful companionship, particularly in the yard. She has been nothing but gentle with every creature in the house, though she has tested not cat safe.  She walks very well on leash and tends to hug your side if something startles her. She is PERFECT in her crate and readily goes in for a small treat.  She's a very smart girl and very food motivated, so she will be easy to train.  Brook is a very sweet easygoing girl who lives to please and works very hard to figure out what her humans want.

Kristin is a precious little doll of a girl!  She's playful and up for a little chance to kick up her heels whenever it's offered.  She has beautiful dark black stripes in her brindling and lively little eyes that follow anything interesting going on around her.  She will hopefully be tested early next week for cats and small dogs.  She learned the stairs in her foster home on the first try, crates comfortably, and potties on leash given just a little time to find her favorite spots.  She's gotten along fine with the other two girls in her foster home without complaint.  Kristin will make a wonderful companion for any family seeking a lively greyhound up for new adventures.

Jeff is a tall, handsome boy whose personality just bubbles and bursts to the surface at every opportunity.  He's a bouncy, active boy who thinks attention from his humans is the best possible reward in the whole world!  He is beginning to settle into retirement but is continuing to work on pottying on leash.  He passed his small dog test but has not yet been tested with the kitties.  Jeff is so affectionate and happy that he may not be suited for homes with very small children only because of his activity level.  More information on Jeff coming soon!

Raccoon is a sweet submissive boy who can be initially just a bit
timid. He warms up quick though and will follow you around and will
give gentle kisses. He seems to prefer women over men. He passed his cat and small dog test so could live with either. Raccoon is normally a very quiet, laid back, guy that crates well, he will make a little noise to alert you he needs to go out. He is not a marker so has done well with potty training. Raccoon knows his name and will come
running if you call him. He is a very sweet guy that was a kennel
favorite when he was racing. He likes to ride in the car and is a
dream to walk on leash. Most of the time he walks carefully next to
you without pulling. The only time he pulls is if he is afraid of
something. This sweet boy should be an easy addition to just about
any home and with his stunning unusual looks probably will go fast.

is very cat friendly and is fine with small dogs too. He crates well
and is quiet while crated. He is fascinated by his reflection - he
knows he is a good looking boy. He follows along nicely on walks in

tail never stops wagging that will make an easy addition to just

Tortilla and Juanita are littermate brindle girls who have been together their entire lives.  The owners feel they are bonded and would be lost without each other, so we have promised to keep them together.  This is a a rare opportunity and one we know will make a lucky family very happy.  Another sibling from this litter is catsafe and the owners think they probably are too, but will be tested as soon as possible to confirm.  They are available now and will be moved into our program as soon as find a foster home willing to host them together, or their new home of course.  What a beautiful pair of delightful twin girls!  If you would like to help them, use any of the email links on our pages to ask for more details.

He gets along well with cats and small dogs. He potties on leash but takes his time and is quiet in his crate. He couldn't be any cuter or sweeter.

Marty was a super racer until he broke his leg in a race over a year ago. The leg is fully healed and functional now and he has been cleared by the vet to resume running and playing. Marty is a happy, confident boy and his tail wags all the time. He loves everyone and will do just about anything for attention and affection. With his willingness to please and because he seems to be quite intelligent, Marty would probably be an excellent obedience dog. He loves to give hugs and kisses. Because of his size we have discouraged the hugging so it is something he does now only when invited. Marty has learned good house manners and gets along well with a number of other dogs in his foster home, male and female. He also passed his cat and small dog tests so should be able to live with either. This is a handsome boy that is going to make an excellent pet, just look at that grin!

Updated description! 11.25.07~   Journey is a tiny boy, but full of energy and enthusiasm!!! He prefers to be with his people and/or other large dogs. He is a bit timid on stairs so would not make a good apartment dog. He will also bark if crated and he knows people are close but not giving him attention. He seems to crate quietly when left alone though, especially in the company of other dogs. He's really opening up to become an affectionate boy and is very eager to please.  He's improved wonderfully on his leash manners & will faithfully sit for treats and dinner. He also knows down and is working on perfecting wait and leave it. Journey is a sweet, young, small boy who will give kisses and has the happiest helicopter tail that hardly ever stops!   Since he's a more confident, alpha boy, he would be happiest in a home with other, more submissive dogs or would do well on his own in an active household. He's a fun little boy who loves to play and would really appreciate a fenced yard to run off some of that puppy energy daily. He's ready to go with a family looking for a really fun companion!

Squirrel would be a better name for this girl than Suddenly. She does not move slowly but flits from place to place in a huge hurry then pauses and then is off again to check something else out. She needs work on leash manners because of her excitement in checking out everything around her. She is really sweet and will play bow and pounce around trying to get someone to play. Her tail goes the entire time! She seems to be very submissive and keeps her head low and tail low when meeting people and other dogs but wags like mad and is very happy. She is eager to please and loves people so should be a breeze to train. She can be a bit noisy in her crate so probably isn't the best apartment dog. She squeaks mostly and sounds like a rusty gate so isn't as loud as some, but is already doing better though and sleeping thru the night. She potties on leash perfectly so could live in without a fence yard but with her energy level she would probably enjoy having a yard to run in. Squirrel/Suddenly is a beautiful, dark, mahogany looking, brindle with a tiny black face that already has a few white hairs. Very cute and very sweet!

Katie is once again available for adoption but there is no problem with her at all- it's a very sad case of inoperable brain cancer in a family member and they just aren't able to care for her. They say she is the perfect dog with no issues. She does a quick bark to let you know when she needs to go outside and never has accidents in the house. She doesn't chew or tear up anything and shows no sign of any separation anxiety when left alone. They said they got her a crate but never needed to use it. Katie loves everyone but is most fond of children and women. She has been living with a handicapped child that is in a wheel chair and is wonderful with him. Her favorite activities are laying in the sun and chasing squirrels out of the yard. She loves to go for rides and especially likes to go to PetSmart where her dad works. She has been living with a small dog and tested cat tolerant when she arrived. She came to Freedom Weekend last year and was a fantastic meet and greet dog.

Bentley is a 7 year old brindle boy that is being returned because his family is going to be moving pretty frequently and has a young child and doesn't have the time to spend with a dog that they used to. Bentley lives with a toddler, cat and small dog and is fine with all of them. He is friendly. He has developed a fear of Thunderstorms and some possible enclosure anxiety if he is crated. She says he will bite the crate and stress a bit but normally doesn't need a crate. Otherwise he is a great dog who likes to go for walks, lay on the couch and be with his people.

He just arrived and our vet is evaluating him to see if it healed completely in the 6 weeks since his accident. He is a very sweet guy and pretty calm so far for one so young. He gives kisses and crates well. He loves to go for rides in the car and just lays down and goes to sleep.  Description Update!  3.10.08~  Caleb's foster mom describes him as sweet, sweet, sweet!  He gives gentle kisses, plays with toys, and rubs on his humans when he thinks he needs more attention.  He is very smart and has figured out the rules in his home already, responding quickly to correction.  He crates quietly without complaint and has had no accidents inside.  Caleb is discovering toys and seems to forget that his foot was ever injured when it's time to play!  Our vet says that his foot has healed solidly and has cleared him for whatever exercise he can handle comfortably.  (see picture link for more information on his injured foot)  He's a wonderful, low-key boy with the heart of a puppy, just looking for his family to love.

Congratulations to the Potzrebowski_Turner Family of TN!  Adoption Day 3.30.08
