Special Needs - Very Shy! Jarrod initially was sent to the adoption kennel at the race track in Jacksonville in November. He was there for a couple of weeks and wasn't doing well because he is very shy. They asked us if we could take him into one of our foster homes to get him home acclimated at the beginning of December so he has been with us for months waiting on the right home. Jarrod never was interested in racing so never had an official race. He is a small guy that weighs about 68lbs and turned 2 on October 13th. His sire is Offthebrakedrake and his dam is Shorty's Nana. He passed his cat and small dog tests and is living with cats in his foster home. Jarrod is a genetically shy boy that is afraid of new people, new things and fast movements. It is his personality and not the result of anything bad happening to him. We occasionally see dogs like him that seem to have something similar to an anxiety disorder and are afraid of everything. He will need a family with a lot of patience that can wait for him to warm up to them. It may take months or a year, before a shy dog like him, gets really comfortable in a home. He is probably always going to want to be a homebody. Going out in public and travel is probably going to be too overwhelming, so his family will need to be understanding of that. We have him listed as older children only because the fast movements and loud noises that little children make will be frightening to him. Like most shy dogs, Jarrod would probably do best in a home with another more confident dog to hang out with. It took Jarrod a couple of months to get to the point that his foster mom could reach out and pet him without him ducking away. He wouldn't approach her at first unless she was kneeling or squatting down. He did sneak up to sniff her when her back is turned. He does seem to want to interact but just has to get his courage up. He plays with toys now and will play bow and bark and run around when his foster mom play bows back at him. He chooses to stay in the room with his foster mom now, rather than going back to his crate or hiding in another room. After a few months he started seeking affection and will come to his foster mom to be petted now. He is very good in the house and hasn't had an accident yet. He goes to the back door when he needs to go outside. He does get loud in the crate sometimes, so he won't be a good apartment dog. Jarrod is a gorgeous brindle boy with very unusual golden eyes. So handsome! It is very rewarding to work with an exceptionally shy dog like Jarrod. When he finally comes around and decides to trust his new family it will be a beautiful thing, but it will take a lot of patience on the part of his new family. He is an exceptionally timid boy.
